I need a brew
The life of a shabti is a tough one, indeed. Their sole purpose in life is to work in the afterlife, doing menial, boring tasks for their deceased master. Never a ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ or ‘why don’t you take a couple of weeks off’. Poor little guys. And this one really looks like he’s been through the mill.
Frenzied days at work will take their toll on the best of us, making us feel frazzled and out-of-sorts. Do you feel like this poor shabti looks after a long day? Well then, throw a brew in your shabti mug and put your feet up. Grab a book or put on your favourite TV show, and drive those frazzles away.
This little shabti, only a few inches tall, has been photographed using a macro lens against a black background to give the piece its own space in which to show off and to highlight its amazing detail. It’s from the collection at the Garstang Museum of Archaeology in Liverpool.
