Drinking, refreshment, cooling, nourishment, relaxation

Clean, fresh water to drink was as important to our ancient ancestors as it is to us today. This ancient Egyptian is catching cool, refreshing water to drink from the goddess Hathor, who would nourish and protect those in the afterlife.

This person is part of the inscription on the limestone statue fragment of Hathor on display at the the Garstang Museum of Archaeology in Liverpool (accession number E.66). This particular detail is only a few centimetres in height. The statue was excavated by John Garstang at Esna in Upper Egypt and dates to the reign of Ramesses IV, who reigned 1155–1149 BC.
