The name of Thoth in hieratic: fine-art print

£65.00£130.00

Description

Thoth was a true academic; the god of knowledge and the inventor of writing. He was a record-keeper and accountant, as well as messenger, mediator and advisor to the other gods. He also recorded the passing of time and possessed special magic and knowledge unknown to even the other gods.

This print is of the hieratic writing of the name Thoth. Hieratic was the everyday, cursive version of hieroglyphs used by scribes. The hieroglyph used primarily to write the name ‘Djehuty’ was an ibis on a standard; the elegant swoosh of the beak and back make the bird recognisable, even in cursive form.

This writing is a detail mere millimetres tall from a page of the Book of the Dead funerary text. The owner of the manuscript was a woman called Tjawtayundenit, a songstress of Amun-Re who lived in Thebes during the 21st Dynasty (1069–945 BC).

I have photographed it using a macro lens to bring out the detail in the brush strokes and lit it carefully to highlight the texture of the papyrus. It’s from the collection at the Garstang Museum of Archaeology in Liverpool (accession number E.507(1)) and was featured in their 2017 exhibition Book of the Dead: Passport through the Underworld.

About your print

Print details

Your photo will be printed on Hahnemühle Pearl fine-art giclée paper.

Hahnemühle Pearl has a smooth orange peel texture and a bright neutral white base. It creates vibrant colour reproduction and great detail. The paper is resin coated with a fibrous feel, with the satin finish of the coating giving depth to the image.

Your photo will be printed and fulfilled by theprintspace, an award-winning fine-art print house favoured by professional artists and photographers alike.

The print has a narrow, white border. Not only does this make handling the print easier (no fingerprints!), it also means you can get it framed and/or mounted without losing the edges of the photo.

The print has a life expectancy of around 80 years in average daylight conditions; however, where and how you keep your print affects this.

  • Avoid hanging it in direct sunlight
  • Avoid subjecting it to temperature and humidity fluctuations, e.g. above a radiator, next to a drafty window, or on outer walls
  • If direct or bright sunlight is unavoidable, consider buying a frame with UV protective glass
  • If you get your print mounted/matted, ask for 100% cotton fibre, acid-free unbuffered mount boards

Dispatch and delivery

Your print will be produced and dispatched by theprintespace in 2–5 working days.

Delivery to the UK and EU usually takes a few days; other countries can take up 5–10 working days. Please bear in mind that these are average times, and delivery during busy periods could take longer.

Once your print is with the delivery company, you should receive an email from them with tracking numbers and delivery information.

Sustainability

Your print will be produced on an order-by-order basis, meaning resources are used only when needed.

theprintspace is a 100% end-to-end carbon-neutral business, using low carbon business practices and carbon offsetting via the Gold Standard and investing in renewable energy projects. This offsetting takes into account the emissions created during the delivery process.

Returns policy

Please note that computer monitors and mobile devices can show colours in slightly different ways and intensities. If the colours in your print don’t look quite the same as how they look on your screen, this is why. However, if there’s an obvious problem with print quality – or your print arrives damaged – please let me know, along with some photos, so I can organise a replacement.

If delivery is significantly delayed (excluding longer delivery times during busy periods or times of strike action), please let me know so we can come up with a solution.

If, when you receive your print, you change your mind, you can return it within 14 days of delivery for a refund or store credit. Just drop me an email if this is the case. Please remember, however, that I am one person, and that I don’t have the financial cushion that large retailers do to be able to offset the cost of lots of returns. Thanks!
